Developing a Practice Routine
Whether or not a musician likes to practice is not indicative of current ability or future success in music. Some students like the regiment of daily practice and some students don't. As parents you can help your child get in the habit of practicing daily, much like they are already in the practice of reading daily.
Here are some recommendations to help make practice time more enjoyable:
1. If possible, try to help your child practice at the same time most days.
2. Ask your child to play something for you at the end of the practice session. Even if you know nothing about music your interest is motivating to your child.
3. I encourage students to have play-overs. It is always more fun to play with friends. This is especially fun and effective after several days of individual practice when counts are written in and students have a start on learning the new songs.
4. The DVD at the back of the Traditions of Excellence book contains accompaniments for the songs. Again, this is most fun once the exercise or song is mastered, especially since the tempos are often fast.
As you child falls in love with their instrument practice time will become more enjoyable. Even some adults don't LOVE to practice yet but they love to play and that motivates them to practice on their own.
